Moments after being denied bail, attempted murder accused Akeem Williams collapsed in the San Fernando Magistrates Court yesterday and had to be taken for medical treatment yesterday. Williams, 32, of Marabella, who is nursing gunshot wounds to his chest and leg, appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington in the San Fernando First Court. He was scheduled to appear on Wednesday but was instead taken for a medical check-up after complaining of feeling unwell. When he appeared yesterday, Wellington read the charge that on January 21, 2014, Williams attempted to murder Andy Bramble, at Bayshore, Marabella.
Bramble, 31, also of Marabella, was chopped, during an altercation. Williams was not called upon to plead as the charge was laid indictably by Cpl David. Williams’ sisters—Kay Greene, 27, a mother of five, and Nandy Williams, 29, the mother of two—are also jointly charged with the same offence. The three first appeared in court last month. They will reappear in court on March 6.
Yesterday, Williams’ attorney, Michael Persadsingh, informed the magistrate his client was suffering from gunshot injuries. He also informed the court he was arrested on a warrant. Police prosecutor attorney Cleon Seedan confirmed Williams’ arrest and informed Wellington the two women were also charged in the matter.
Wellington was also told Williams had two pending matters, one for robbery with violence and another for malicious wounding. On those grounds Williams was denied bail. Upon hearing this, Williams, the lone prisoner in the courtroom dock at the time, collapsed and was heard gasping for air and sobbing. Two police officers who were in the prisoners’ dock went to his aid. The Emergency Health Services (EHS) ambulance was contacted. Williams, surrounded by heavily-armed police officers, was placed on a stretcher and taken to the ambulance. He was treated at the San Fernando General Hospital and later discharged.
