Tyreese J Williams of Arima Boys’ RC School draws position No. 4 in the primary schools category of the Flavourite National School Soca Monarch competition during the draw for positions yesterday.

Reigning monarch Ferdinand Smith will be the final performer at the 15th Flavorite Supreme Ice Cream National School Soca Monarch (NSSM) Competition finals on February 21 at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain. Smith is not the only returning champion this year, as Jeremy Rodriguez, who will be performing just before him, took home the crown last year in the primary school sub-section of the competition.

Unlike Smith, Rodriguez cannot carry the title of reigning monarch, despite his win as he is no longer a primary school pupil. This is his first year competing alongside other secondary school performers, making him ineligible to defend his title. Primary school soca star and 2012 NSSM winner Aaron Duncan will also be competing this year among the 22 overall performers on “Awesome Friday”.

Though Duncan lost the throne to Rodriguez in 2013, Rodriguez’s move into the secondary school sub-section of the competition may better his chances of reclaiming his crown. Rehearsals will begin from tomorrow as the contestants prepare for their upcoming performances.
