Southern division police believe they have made a breakthrough in a series of robberies in the area, following the arrest of six people yesterday. Four men, ages 20 to 26, all from Salazar Trace, Point Fortin were arrested when police intercepted a station wagon at Gulf View, La Romaine. The other two where women aged 37, from Orchard Gardens, Chaguanas, and the other is a 21 year old from Marabella.
Police including PCs Snaggs and Tyson, searched the car and discovered a Mac10 sub-machine gun, loaded with six rounds of ammunition, another 12 rounds of ammunition under one of the seats, two cutlasses, and a ski mask. All six occupants of the car were taken to the Marabella Police Station, where they have been detained and are assisting police in a series of robberies in the southern district. The car was impounded for tracing.
Members of the Southern Division Task Force also carried out a special exercise which began on Thursday morning and ended yesterday morning. During the exercise, which was led by Senior Supt Cecil Santana and ASPs Zamsheed Mohammed and Gaffar, a total of 78 people were arrested for various offences, including eight for narcotics and robberies. A total of 14 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, including the husband of a police officer.
Police also executed 41 warrants, issued 121 traffic tickets and carried out 277 searches. The exercise was carried out in Moruga, Princes Town, Corinth, Pleasantville, Ste Madeleine, Gasparillo, Marabella, San Fernando, La Romaine and Claxton Bay.
