Charged with assault by beating...

A man who surrendered to the police 15 years after he failed to appear in court re-appeared in court on Wednesday. Victor Peters is charged with assault by beating Marilyn Jonathan in Marabella in 1998. He was granted bail but did not turn up in court on the adjourned date. A warrant was issued for his arrest. Last May Peters gave himself up to the police. He then appeared in court and was again granted bail. On Wednesday, his case came up before San Fernando Sixth Court Magistrate Lisa Ramsumair-Hinds.

However, prosecutor Sgt Denzil Alexander said the complainant was not in court and he did not know him. The victim was also absent. The magistrate said: “Mr Peters, you cannot complain. Since 1998 you missed your court date. You did not turn yourself to the police until May 7, 2013. “Fifteen years you had to turn yourself in for the case to be brought back on the list. It will take some time to find the witness and the police officer.

“Let this be an example that a warrant will be executed even if it takes years. Don’t miss any more court dates, rain or shine.” The matter was adjourned to next February 4.
