Newly named People's National Movement (PNM) senator, TV6 weekend news anchor Diane Baldeo-Chadeesingh was "dismissed with immediate effect" earlier today, once news of her appointment was made public.
Deputy head of news at the station, Sharon Hamilton, in a telephone interview confirmed the dismissal.
"She was dismissed because there is a conflict of interest," Hamilton said.
She said the station was not aware that their weekend anchor was in talks with the Opposition party.
"The station was not aware at all of any political plans," she said.
Hamilton said the station found out only when PNM leader Dr Keith Rowley issued a statement naming Baldeo-Chadeesingh as one of three new senators.
She joins longtime PNM member Camille Robinson-Regis and Avinash Singh, who contested and lost the Chaguanas by-election against Independent Liberal Party's leader Jack Warner.
The three will replace outgoing senators Penelope Beckles-Robinson, Fitzgerald Hinds and Member of Parliament for St Joseph, Terrence Deyalsingh.
