Canadian police have arrested a Trinidad and Tobago national in connection with an alleged sexual assault in October, according to Canadian media reports.
Henry Cooper, 35, of St Mary's Village, Trinidad, was arrested in Bayham Township Saturday. He faces four charges: sexual assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, overcoming resistance by attempting to choke and uttering threats to cause death.
He is being held in custody pending a bail hearing.
Police said Cooper had been working for a local farmer, and he was not known to the woman who was assaulted.
Victim had minor injuries
On October 19, a woman at a rural residence near Vienna was reportedly grabbed from her front porch by an unknown male and forced inside her residence before being sexually assaulted.
After the male left the woman was able to call for help. She was treated for minor injuries at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital and then released.
DNA evidence critical
DNA proved to be the key to Cooper’s arrest on Saturday, police said at a media conference even though Cooper was not part of the national DNA data bank.
Officials said forensic officers collected samples from the crime scene but did not disclose exactly how they were able to recover DNA evidence before the arrest was made.
