After seizure of AK-47 assault rifles, ammo at courier service...

A 26-year-old woman is one of two people detained in connection with the discovery of three AK 47 assault rifles with ammunition and magazines at Piarco Air Services Bond in San Juan on Wednesday.

Police said the woman is from Globe Lane in San Juan, while the man, 34, is from Hummingbird Circular in Petit Valley.

The sender’s address was identified to be a residential address at Gosfield Drive, Brampton, Ontario, Canada.

However, the addresses on two of the barrels carried correct names but fake addresses. A third barrel bore another woman’s name and was addressed to Eckle Village, Road, Williamsville.

It is believed that two barrels were cleared undetected by a consignee minutes before the discovery was made. It was said that those barrels that managed to leave the Bond undetected contained seven or eight more AK 47s, along with magazines for MAC 10s and 11s, as well as assorted ammunition and 5.6 mm calibres.

One of the address seen on two of the seized barrels was Moraldo Trace, Maraval, however, it was found that there is no such address in the Maraval area but rather intelligence received suggested that the barrels were in fact destined for the Santa Cruz area.

When the T&T Guardian team visited the Santa Cruz area there were other blue barrels in the yard of a split-level house. The handwriting looked similar to the handwriting on the seized barrels, however, the one in Santa Cruz was marked with a different name and a Port-of-Spain address.

T&T Guardian was told by a police source that the investigation “is very much low-keyed” and investigating officers are instructed to “remain tight-lipped about the status of the investigations.”

When the T&T Guardian visited the Piarco Air Services Bond yesterday, operations resumed to normalcy. One worker, who wished not to be identified, said that officers returned yesterday morning to carry out further investigations,” after they left though everything went back normal. I thought security would have been heightened but nothing out of the norm.”

The three high-powered assault rifles were discovered wrapped in cellophane wrap in barrels containing dog food and other items including 20 kg bags of flour at the El Socorro Bond area of Piarco Air Services. Law enforcement officers also recovered pistols, assorted ammunition and magazines.
