Quick action by Black Rock villagers and police from the Old Grange station saved the life of a Tobago police officer yesterday.
According to reports, PC Wendell McPherson, of Black Rock, was in his kitchen around 1 pm, when bandits stormed his home and announced a hold up. Sources say one man held a gun to his head, while two others ransacked his home in search of cash and valuables. On realising he was a police officer, the men demanded he hand over his government-issued firearm but he refused.
Police said the officer then fought with the gunman and escaped through a back door, jumping some distance to get away. He injured his leg in the process.
The T&T Guardian was told villagers heard the commotion and called the police.
Officers on patrol in the area at the time responded and with the assistance of the villagers apprehended the men.
McPherson was taken to the Scarborough General Hospital nursing injuries to his leg and was still warded in a satisfactory condition last night.
Three of the four men, said to be from Trinidad, were detained, while the search is on for the fourth suspect. Some $1,100 in cash and two cellular phones were taken from McPherson. The firearm used in the robbery was also recovered.
Old Grange police are continuing investigations.
