Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar says no one should comply with the request to submit their personal information and the property tax valuation form until the Court makes a final pronouncement.
Persad-Bissessar said this yesterday, as she spoke to media following the ruling of Justice Frank Seepersad regarding the property tax form.
Seepersad ruled that there is no need to file property tax declaration forms until the determination of a lawsuit challenging the fiscal measure.
Persad-Bissessar said the injunction granted by Seepersad effectively blocks the government from continuing it's "reckless path to tax our people into poverty."
"Had the Government listened to us, it would have avoided this humiliating and embarrassing breach of the rule of law," Persad-Bissessar said.
She said she welcomed the grant of the injunction by the Supreme Court of Justice.
"We promised you a strong and forceful legal challenge to the illegal and unconstitutional action of the Minister of Finance and now Acting Prime Minister Colm Imbert."
She said the Property Tax Act was not passed with a special majority and interferes with several fundamental rights that are enshrined in the Constitution.
