Venezuelan Ambassador to T&T Coromoto Godoy Calderon is blaming the United States for the civil unrest in Venezuela, charging the hidden agenda is to internationally isolate the country and justify military intervention.

“The onslaught on democracy and the rule of law in Venezuala has been orchestrated by the United States senate.”

She said it began on February 28 with the presentation of a resolution brought by “interventionist”, Republican Marco Rubio.

Godoy Calderon described Rubio as a “political mercenary” against the Nicolos Maduro-led Bolivarian government of Venezuela.

The ambassador was addressing the media at a press conference at the Venezuelan Embassy in Port-of-Spain yesterday to give some balance to reporting by the media on the Venezuela situation.

Media reports stated thousands of Venezuelans have been protesting against the Maduro government because of food and medicine shortages and his style of governance.

Godoy Calderon said “everything the Venezuela opposition and media say about the country is false”.

She attempted to correct the “fake news” about Venezuela backed up by videos showing how the protests were orchestrated.

The US Senate unanimously approved the in February resolution expressing “profound concern” over the crisis in Venezuela and calling for the immediate release of political prisoners.

US President Donald Trump and opponents of Maduro have called for the release of jailed opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez and others prisoners.

The resolution adopted calls for Venezuela to respect the democratic process and urged the Organization of American States (OAS) to adopt additional measures to deal with the crisis in the country, which it said is suffering from recession, skyrocketing inflation and shortages of food and medicine.

Godoy Calderon said after the US senate resolution and the subsequent approval by the OAS (made up of South American and Caribbean countries) a wave of violent protests was unleashed in Venezuela.

“Violent armed groups go out daily to commit crime,” she said.

God0y Calderon said if Maduro wasn’t managing the protests well it could have resulted in a full blown civil war in Venezuela.

“The acts of violence that are currently being generated are intentionally provoked by the anti-Bolivarian right wing.”

She said for more than 40 continuous days Venezuela’s security forces have been attacked by mercenary forces.

Coromoto Godoy Calderon, Ambassador of Venezuela, holds a copy of the Constitution of Venezuela as she addresses members of the media during a news conference she hosted at the Embassy of Venezuela, Victoria Avenue, Port- of- Spain yesterday.
