The Ministry of National Security has launched an investigation into protest action by members of the Opposition at the opening of the Brian Lara Cricket Stadium and Academy at Tarouba, south Trinidad, last Friday.

In a statement yesterday, the ministry said the probe will determine whether anyone was culpable for the massive traffic jam and whether any action should be taken.

The ministry also deemed the protest as being “reckless” saying it was concerned about the “undue disruption to the lives of thousands of commuters due to the ill-advised and irresponsible protest action by members of the Opposition.”

The ministry believes it was a bid to score cheap political points by mounting protest action at the opening “and its cohorts instead created chaos and confusion on the nation’s roadways.

It is very worrying that ordinary commuters found themselves trapped in the massive traffic pileup since they were simply seeking to make their way to the event, or to their homes in the south land. the release said.

It added “What is even more disparaging is the fact that those persons leading the protesters, included esteemed Opposition Members of Parliament who seemed to care less about how their actions were negatively affecting persons going about their legitimate business.”

The ministry said such irresponsible action by the Opposition UNC cannot be condoned and must be exposed for what it is–a reckless and self-serving act, which could have endangered lives.

“ Their actions created unnecessary risk, and had there been any on toward incidence, for instance a vehicular accident, it would have been very difficult for emergency personnel to respond in a timely fashion,” the release also said.
