Two councillors in the Chaguanas Borough Corporation allegedly almost came to blows earlier this week, after allegations of misuse of corporation equipment were raised in the chamber.
According to information Guardian Media received, during a meeting of the corporation’s Physical Infrastructure Council on Tuesday, councillor for Enterprise South Ronald Heera raised the issue just after 4 pm.
This initially resulted in a war of words between Heera and Montrose representative Andell Paramsook. The verbal exchange became heated and escalated with a physical confrontation which caused other council members to intervene.
The meeting was brought to an abrupt end and the two councillors were removed, but the matter did not end there. They reportedly confronted each other again outside and councillors Debideen Manick and Adrian Ali had to separate the two.
Contacted yesterday, Heera said he had no comment on the matter.
Paramsook meanwhile said due to the standing orders he would not comment on what transpired in the chamber. He explained, however, that changes are taking place in the corporation and there is some resistance.
Admitting that when one has a lot of ideas there are negative forces which will try to discourage you, he said, “However, I am pressing forward to do the good work for the people of Montrose, Chaguanas. It’s my duty to serve them and no one owes me anything for this. I am happy to serve.”
Also contacted, Chaguanas Mayor Gopaul Boodan admitted that tempers do flare during meetings from time to time, but said he preferred not to comment on the said matter.
But Guardian Media understands the matter is now engaging the attention of the police who will utilise a video of the altercation during their probe.
