Two sets of brothers were yesterday among five men who appeared in the San Fernando and Siparia Magistrates’ Courts charged with two separate murders.

Brothers Dennil, 29, and Derrick Ramsawak, 19, were charged with murdering Deoraj Bedassie, whose burnt remains were found in a latrine pit in Gasparillo, while brothers Aziz, 26, Aleem Shah, 19 and Doneil Roberts, 35, were charged with killing Chaguanas “PH” driver Kendall Trim, 27, in Santa Flora.

The charges were laid against the five men on Monday night following instructions by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The Ramsawak brothers, of Tinpan Ali Trace, Barrackpore, hid their faces as they were being escorted by police to the San Fernando Court. Wiping away tears, the brothers, both labourers, appeared before Second Court Magistrate Margaret Alert who read the charge to them.

The charge alleged that on a date unknown between March 25 and April 5, they murdered Bedassie, 52, at Black Street, Reform Village. Bedassie was last seen alive by his relatives on his birthday on March 26. His charred remains were found on April 4 in a latrine at the back of his home.

The brothers were charged by Cpl Mitra Singh of Homicide Region III and represented by duty counsel Khelsy Maharaj. The magistrate told them they were not entitled to bail and adjourned the matter to May 9.

Meanwhile, the Shah brothers, of Claxton Bay and Roberts, of Couva, appeared before Siparia Senior Magistrate Armina Deonarinesingh charged with Trim’s murder and six other offences.

It is alleged that Trim, 27, of Dass Trace, Enterprise, was hired by three men shortly after 9 pm on April 4, but upon reaching Robert Trace, Santa Flora, he was shot several times and subsequently died at hospital. The suspects stole his B-14 car.

Aziz Shah, who was shot in the leg by the police, and the two other accused were arrested hours later. They were charged by WPC Ferguson of Homicide Region III. They were represented by attorneys Alvin Pariagsingh, Frank Gittens and Indira Binda. They too were remanded into custody to reappear in court on May 9.
