Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has assured that all systems are on alert to deal with floods, even as torrential showers left several areas under water yesterday and more rain being expected today. She spoke with reporters yesterday in Penal after opening a $4.1 million bridge at Boodoo Branch Trace, Penal. Persad-Bissessar and other government ministers were sheltered by umbrellas as they stood in the rain on the new bridge across the swollen river.
She said: “I have a BBM (Blackberry Messenger) group with all my ministers on it, so on that BBM I have asked Minister of Local Government (Marlene Coudray) Minister National Security (Gary Griffith) and Minister of Works (Surujrattan Rambachan) to be on the alert in the event of flooding.” She said she had not been advised about any flooding but she observed that the water was rising.
“And therefore all systems are on the alert in the event that we have to deal with anything,” she added.
