Police have launched a search for a male relative of an eight-month-old baby who died at his Angelina Terrace home in Morvant on Tuesday night. Sydney Stellis’ mother returned from work and was told the baby was found lying motionless on a bed at the family’s board house. A report said she had gone out around 4 pm, leaving baby Sydney in the care of a relative. Sydney was fed and laid to rest on a mattress but when he was later checked by relatives around 10 pm he was found unresponsive. They notified the police.

Sydney was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The district medical officer and the Morvant police also responded. Statements were taken from the child’s mother and other relatives. Police said the autopsy revealed the baby died of unnatural causes—blunt force trauma and broken ribs which weres the result of a beating. When a Guardian team visited the family’s home, relatives said they did not wish to speak about the incident.

One of the relatives said she could not bear to even look at Sydney’s photograph and wiped away tears from her face. The child’s mother was not at home. Police said they were combing the area for the relative, who is a possible suspect in the baby’s death. Officers of the Morvant CID are continuing investigations.
