Investigations are continuing into the seizure of 96.64 kilos of high-grade marijuana from a container at the Port-of-Spain port yesterday. The marijuana, of a type referred to as Arizona, was valued at $7.2 million. The 22 packets were found packed in five duffel bags in a 40-foot container full of barrels that originated from New York. A log revealed the boat transporting the container stopped in Jamaica to collect additional cargo.
Acting on information, port officers, members of the Criminal Gang and Investigations Unit, and Customs and Excise officials did surveillance throughout Tuesday night before carrying out an exercise around 8 am yesterday. Senior officers said no one was arrested in connection with the discovery and investigations were continuing to determine for whom the drugs were intended.
The T&T Guardian understands the container had more than 100 consignees, as it contained barrels sent by people in the US to relatives and friends living in T&T.
