A Palmyra man accused of driving the car which struck and killed a New Grant mother appeared in court yesterday charged with causing her death by dangerous driving and driving under the influence of alcohol. Owen Hinds, 44, was remanded in custody to today for the police to conduct a fingerprint trace to determine if had previous convictions or pending matters. He appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington in the San Fernando First Court.
Hinds faces three charges in connection with the Independence Day accident which claimed the life Denyse Seepersad-Joseph, a mother of four. Seepersad-Joseph, 39, was struck on August 31 while walking along Tarouba Road, St Clement Village, Ste Madeleine. She was holding her four-year-old daughter, Abigail, in her arms. On impact the child was thrown some distance away. Seepersad-Joseph died on the spot. Abigail received minor injuries and was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital where she was warded.
Hinds was arrested and charged by Cpl Krishendeo Jagdeo of the Ste Madeleine Police Station. The charges are causing her death by dangerous driving, dangerous driving and consuming alcohol which exceeding the prescribed limit by 46 microgrammes.
