Five weeks after Premnath Rampaul was knocked down in Chaguanas by one of the vehicles in the Attorney General’s security detail, he has been discharged from hospital. His daughter Meera Rampaul said her father was discharged from the San Fernando General Hospital on Saturday and was doing all right, but he has to undergo a third operation. Rampaul’s leg was broken when he was struck by a Toyota Prado during the Chaguanas West by-election on July 29. He spent a few days at Gulf View Medical Centre before being transferred to the SFGH and has since undergone two operations on the right leg.

In a telephone interview yesterday, Meera Rampaul said her father was not out of the woods and still has an infection in the right leg. “Every week, maybe once or twice a week, he has to go back to the hospital to see if the infection is still under control.” She said once the infection goes away the doctors will operate. Meera Rampaul said the family will have to find a nurse to care for her father because everyone in the house is working. “We will have to hire a geriatric nurse or somebody to take care of him while we are in work.”

In an interview last week Thursday, Attorney General Anand Ramlogan said Rampaul’s medical bill at the nursing home had been sorted out. Asked if he will be visiting Rampaul again, he said he was awaiting an invitation from the family, because he did not want to show up by ambush. However, he said he was keeping tabs on Rampaul’s condition and was told Rampaul’s recovery “is progressing quite well.”
