A hard day at work ended in tragedy for three Mayaro men after their car crashed into a utility pole, killing the driver and leaving the others in a critical condition. Offshore worker Marvin La Foucade, 30, of Ortoire Village, Mayaro, died on the spot when the steering wheel of his Toyota Corolla rammed into his chest on Monday.

His colleagues, Akeel Decane and Randy Mohammed, also of Mayaro, were up to yesterday warded at the Sangre Grande Hospital. Police said the men were travelling along the Naparima/Mayaro Road around 5.30 pm, when upon reaching Union Village, Rio Claro, La Foucard lost control of the car, which ran off the road and slammed into the pole. Rio Claro police and firefighters responded and had to use the Jaws of Life to free Decane and Mohammed from the wreck.

In an unrelated incident, South Western Division police are also investigating an explosion which destroyed a pickup truck in Penal. Reports stated that around 11.30 pm on Monday, Sookdeo Ramkhelawan was at his home when he was awakened by a crashing sound. Ramkhelawan said he looked through a window and saw his Toyota Vigo, which was parked in his driveway, on fire. He and relatives were able to extinguish the blaze, but most of the vehicle was destroyed. Investigators said damage had been estimated at $60,000.
